Boys Bracket 1 -Governor’s Challenge
Oakdale
The Bears are returning to the tournament for their 5th straight year. They graduate only three players including Tyler Horning from a year ago after finishing with a 9-12. Oakdale should be very serious heavy this year with 10 players in their final season as Bear.
Potomac (MD)
Potomac is looking to get back on track after a rebuilding season a year ago. The Wolverines have added a big piece in 6-foot-7 forward Christian Dyches, a transfer from powerhouse DeMatha Catholic.
IDEA Charter
IDEA lost the bulk of its roster to graduation, but will look to guards Tunde Scrivner and Malik Miller to carry the scoring load.
North Caroline
The Bulldogs are one of the sleeper picks to come out of the Bayside North this year. The team returns several key players from a year ago, including Jamion Franklin, David Bailey Jr., and Tay Potts. They will be under new coaching this year as Steve Perry returns to lead the Bulldogs.
Parkside
The Rams look to be in full rebuild mode this year. The Rams took serious hits to transfers, losing 1st-Team All-Bayside guard Gary Briddell to Stephen Decatur, while rising forward Tyrese Purnell transferred to Saints Peter and Paul. The team will be young but will have a few returning nice pieces, including point guard Paul Morgan.
Milford Mill
The Millers look to be in full rebuild mode following heavy graduation losses; only two players remain from the squad Milford Mill brought to last year’s Governor’s Challenge.
CH Flowers
New coach Brian Brooks takes over at the helm for the Jaguars, a team that won a bracket championship each of the past two years. Senior transfers Glenn Ford and DeMarcus Demonia are among the Jaguars’ top players to watch.
Paint Branch
Paint Branch makes its Governor’s Challenge debut this season, and brings a solid and athletic group from Montgomery County.
Snow Hill
The Eagles will be one of the teams to beat in the 1A this year. Snow Hill returns the core from its team a year ago and will now be a seasoned, talented and dangerous team led by Ameer Fisher. Along with the high scoring, strong guard, Snow Hill will have an athletic big man in DJ Thornton, Takhai Wise and Amonty Allen.
Archbishop Curley
Curley makes its Governor’s Challenge debut under new coach in Phil Hahn, who was an assistant Perry Hall last season.
St. Joes By the Sea
Hailing from Staten Island, NY, the Vikings return for their third straight Governor’s Challenge. After winning their Gov. Challenge bracket in 2014, they lost both games in 2015.
Thomas Stone
Thomas Stone won its bracket last year with one of the event’s most exciting finishes, as forward JCee Coleman nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Coleman graduated, but the Cougars have several seniors back and ready to repeat.
