Bikers from around the world hit Salisbury

Today thousands of cyclist geared up for sea gull century’s 28th annual event
and 47 ABC was there for the occasion.

“It’s pretty amazing how many people will come to Salisbury to tour the beautiful eastern shore,” said one of the event coordinators, Amy Waters.

7,000 bicyclists ages 9 to 89, from all over the country, crowded around Salisbury University’s plaza Saturday morning; each one riding for a different cause.

” People are out here for all sort of things,” said Waters> “Fitness, honor, in memory of, a challenge. So it’s nice to hear all their stories and why they’re here.”

The event began and ended at Salisbury University but registered riders had three different routes to choose from; Assateaugue Century which stretches one hundred miles, Snow hill also at 100 miles and the Princess Anne Metric at sixty five miles.
Each route chosen to give the rider views of some of the more historical parts of the Eastern Shore. But 10 year old Azyra Franklin, a Maryland Native, rode sixty five miles with her dad for a different reason.

She tells 47 ABC she’s been lifting weights and training to ride as a competitor with  Get it in Cyclist.  So, we asked Azyra’s dad what he thought.

“Oh its awesome,” boasted Mr. Franklin. ” Id say, it’s the best thing since sliced bread in my opinion.”

There were bicyclists from as far as California present Saturday and no one let a little rain get in their way. This event started out with thirty people as a SU bike club from there the passion in cycling grew it to the event it is today. Saturday’s festivities are said to be bringing over 2.5 million dollars into Salisbury.
