Big Second Half Powers Washington To Upset Of Mardela

The No. 5 Washington boys soccer team got their state tournament run started with an upset win Thursday night when they rolled past No. 4 Mardela 4-0. The Jaguars advance to face top seeded Crisfield.

The teams would be in a bit of a defensive battle early on. The Jaguars would try and send through balls to Riley Horner and Mohamed Jalal, but weren’t able to connect to get the 1v1 with the keeper they were looking for. The Warriors were equally as persistent on the offensive end. Late in the first half, they would draw a corner that Noah Ray would play into the box. Will Goslee would get a head on it but it would sail over the upright, no good. With around 15 minutes to go in the half, the Jaguars would finally break through. A deep through ball would find Horner who would get a step on his defender, then get a touch just before the Warriors keeper was able to come out to challenge the shot. Horner would send it home near post as the Jaguars would take a 1-0 lead into the half time. The game quickly swung in the second half though. Just 10 minutes into the period, a loose ball in front of the box would be fired home by Jalal. Then just minutes later, Horner would play a free kick into the box that Rykell Waters would head home. Washington would then cap off the scoring of the night with another loose ball in the box that was put away by Jalal.
