Alex and Calvin’s Law now in effect in Md.

For Maryland residents, one of the new laws that went into effect over the weekend is called Alex and Calvin’s Law, which deals with parents that give alcohol to kids who are underage.

According to the new law if a parent gives an underage child alcohol they could face up to a year in prison and a maximum fine of $5,000 if the drinkers drive and then cause any injury.

Salisbury based attorney Eddie Gonzalez said he believes many parents probably don’t know about the new law and that the state should do more to advertise the new laws if they want people to know them.

“One would think that they would spend more time and energy and resources in actually getting the word out so that there wouldn’t be a need to punish people, but to potentially curb that behavior before it even happens,” Gonzalez said.

Alex and Calvin’s law was named after two Maryland High School graduates who were killed in an accident where the driver was underage and had consumed alcohol at an adult supervised party.
