UPDATE: Pedestrian identified in fatal crash in Dover

Delaware State Police is currently investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash on Monday that reportedly claimed the life of a pedestrian.

According to reports, the crash happened around 8:30 P.M. as 22-year-old Kevin King, of Dover was driving southbound in the left lane on North Dupont Highway, just south of Fork Branch Road. At the same time 41-year-old Robert Smith, of Felton, was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of North Dupont Highway from east to west. Troopers say that’s when Smith entered the path of King’s car and was hit with the left front bumper throwing him up into the windshield and then into the center median.

Smith, who was reportedly carrying a small flashlight, was transported to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. King reportedly sustained no injuries.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. Southbound lane of North Dupont Highway was closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. Investigators say it is unknown if the flashlight Smith was carrying was functioning properly before the collision. Speed does not appear to be a factor on the part of King.

Troopers are reminding pedestrians to use caution and safety when walking on or near roadways. If you must cross a roadway utilize appropriate cross walks and make sure to look left, then right, then left again before proceeding. When walking near a roadway always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials. Pedestrians that are walking at night must carry a flashlight for added safety.
