‘Streetscape Improvement Project’ underway in Del.

Construction for the Lake Avenue Streetscape Improvements Project started Monday in Rehoboth Beach.

Sidewalks compliant with the Disabilities Act, new street lighting, and additional crosswalks are just a few of the features city officials are looking to fix.

Krys Johnson, a communications specialist for the city of Rehoboth Beach, says this is a project largely sponsored through DelDot. Rehoboth beach was recently granted 800,000 dollars, which is about 80 percent of the total project cost.

Construction work will occur Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. through 5 p.m., which is when street parking on Lake Avenue is prohibited.

According to Johnson, the project has been long-needed citing safety concerns as Lake Avenue is prone to heavy traffic.

“With not only vehicular traffic but also we have a lot of bicycle traffic that’s here and pedestrian traffic as well. I mean, it’s right off of Rehoboth Avenue, so it stays very busy,” she explains.

The project has been split into two phases, with the second one beginning in February.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed by May 2017.
