Salisbury’s Main Street to undergo major changes

New sidewalks, new streets, new parking stations and more are all coming to East Main Street in Salisbury from the the intersection with Route 13 to the intersection with North Division street.
Upgrades that those like John David Robinson of Robinson’s in Salisbury say are long overdue.
“I’m really excited, finally that they’re actually doing something, every council, every mayors talked about it before for 25, 30 years, my whole life, this is the first time I’ve actually seen something actually being done downtown and I’m glad to be part of it,” Robinson said.
Phase two of the Main Street Masterplan will be as the city is calling it, an entire street reconstruction project. Which means everything from the face of the building on one side of the street to the face of the building on the other side of the street will be redone.
Underneath the streets the city will begin installing fiberoptic internet cable and replace both sewer and water mains.
The project is expected to take year and cost $4.6 million but the end result, according to Salisbury’s deputy director of public works Amanda Pollack, will be well worth it.
“It’s going to be very welcoming, right now there’s no consistency to the theme downtown and once we’re done all the phases it’ll look very nice, you will know you’ve arrive to downtown because it will all look very similar,” Pollack said.
But the question on many peoples mind what will happen during the construction what will happen with traffic.
“We have a construction management company working for the city and they’re going to put out constant updates on the schedule, where roads are closed, there are going to be some detours sometimes so you can’t just drive straight down main street all the time,” Pollack said.
On top of that the city will offer a website that will post when roads are closed and what detours will be available.
They will also have a 24/7 hotline that people with questions can call.
