OCPD reminds drivers to “share the road” during Bikefest

Thousands of motorcyclists are coming to Ocean City for the annual OC Bikefest Motorcycle rally on September 17, and the Ocean City Police Department is warning drivers and motorcyclists to “share the road” and to keep an eye out to keep motorcyclists safe.

Chief Ross Buzzuro says, “It is up to all motorists and motorcyclists to make our roads safer,” drivers should perform visual checks for motorcyclists by checking mirrors and blind spots before they enter or exit a lane of traffic. Pedestrians should also get into the habit of scanning for motorcyclists who might be hidden by other traffic.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, says motorcyclists are very vulnerable compared to a passenger car in the event of a crash. Motorcyclists are encouraged to remain alert to other drivers, not to ride impaired or distracted, and to wear a helmet and other protective gear always.

The Ocean City Police Department is also offering the following tips to keep citizens safe:

  • Perform a visual check for motorcycles by checking mirrors and blind spots before entering or exiting a lane of traffic, and at intersections.
  • Always signal your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic.
  • Allow more following distance – three or four seconds – when behind a motorcycle so the motorcyclist has enough time to maneuver or stop in an emergency.

Furthermore, motorcyclists should follow these tips to remain safe:

  • Avoid riding in poor weather conditions.
  • Wear brightly colored protective gear and a DOT-compliant helmet.
  • Combine hand signals and turn signals to draw more attention.
  • Use reflective tape and stickers to increase visibility.
  • Never drive while impaired or distracted.

For another safe and successful OC BikeFest, the Ocean City Police Department is telling drivers drivers and motorcyclists to participate in the responsibility of keeping people safe and “by sharing the road.
