MuMo aims to steer kids down the right path

Somerset County Health Department has a new app that they hope will help steer kids in the right direction. It’s called MuMo and it’s available now for both Android and Apple.

MuMo stands for “mess up, miss out” because as Jalissa Worthy with the Somerset County Health Department says if teens engage in things like sex, drugs and alcohol they could miss out on life opportunities like graduation, college or just even the opportunity to to be alive and hang out with friends.

Worthy hopes the app will serve as a resource for parents trying to talk to their teens and for the teens themselves.

“Maybe they’re feeling particular pressure in a certain area maybe to smoke or maybe to drink, they’re able to pull that app up, look see what services are offered in the county, who they can talk to if they need help if they want to reach out to someone of if something they just want to investigate more on their own,” Worthy said.

The app has twelve different sections and includes quizzes on topics like STD knowledge and categories like “who can I trust” which directs teens to people they can speak with.

Dalton Adams an eleventh grader at Crisfield High School says the app is smart way to get people involved because of how many people use their phones.

“It’s got a lot of good tools on there that could help them in their life and anyone that’s feeling kind of lost or alone, it’s a good thing for them,” Dalton said.

Adams is part of a student group called S.A.D.D. an acronym for students against destructive decisions.

The group aims to do a lot of what the MuMo does  in steering teens down what they consider the right path.

S.A.D.D. helped advertise for the app with a sidewalk chalk campaign.

The group’s advisor and school nurse Lynne Brumley is all for the app as well.

Brumley says as a nurse students come to her with a variety of questions and when she doesn’t know the answer that’s where MuMo will come in handy.

“The app is going to help all of us fill in the gaps,”Brumley said.

The health department hopes that with the new app that teenagers will make better choices knowing that help is only a click away.

Mumo is also on instagram and you can post pictures of you using the app using the hashtag Mumo.
