Missouri racked up 506 yards and 58 points in the first half en route to a 79-0 victory over Delaware State at Memorial Stadium this afternoon. The two teams agreed to shorten the third and fourth quarters to 10 minutes.
Missouri sophomore quarterback Drew Lock completed 26-of-36 passes for 402 yards and five touchdowns in just the first half of play. Tiger wide receiver J’Mon Moore, also playing the first half only, had eight receptions for 114 yards and four touchdowns.
Mizzou scored touchdowns on eight of its first nine first half possessions. The Tigers drove 94 yards on nine plays on the opening drive of the game, capped off by a two-yard touchdown run by Ish Witter.
Lock and Moore connected for their first touchdown of the game on a four-yard pass to cap a six-play, 99-yard drive on the Tigers’ second possession.
The duo also struck for two more first quarter touchdowns (six and nine yards) and another score in the second quarter.
Mizzou running back Damarea Crockett rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns (2, 11) on 12 carries.
The Tigers totaled 698 yards in the contest, 430 by the pass and 268 on the ground.
Delaware State had 140 total yards, passing for 96 and running for 44 on 26 carries.
DSU crossed into Missouri territory on just one possession, reaching the Tigers’ 36 before throwing an interception with 54 seconds left in the first half.
The Hornets also hurt their cause by losing two fumbles and throwing two interceptions. Missouri did not commit a turnover.
DSU sophomore quarterback Kobie Lain came off the bench to complete seven-of-15 passes for 82 yards. Aris Scott (sr.) caught two passes for a team-high 32 yards, while freshman Mike Waters led the Hornets with 31 yards rushing on seven carries.
“We knew there was a possibility that something like this could happen, but I credit our kids for battling all the way through,” said Delaware State head coach Kenny Carter. “Missouri is an outstanding major college program with great athletes and coaches. They play at a fast pace that we are not likely to see again this year. We begin a new season with the start of MEAC play next week, and that’s always been our main focus this season.”
Carter said it made sense to shorten the second half due to the lopsided nature of the game.
“The NCAA provides an option to shorten a game and Mizzou approached us about it at halftime,” he said. “The coaches and A-Ds from both schools agreed to do it in the interest of player safety.”
DSU will return to action next Saturday (Oct. 1) at Morgan State in the Hornets’ 2016 MEAC opener. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.
The next DSU home game is Oct. 8 against MEAC rival Hampton. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
