Maryland Teacher of the Year finalists have been announced

The 2016-2017 finalists have been named for Maryland Teacher of the Year. Out of 24 candidates, seven finalists were chosen. From those seven, only one finalist is from the Wicomico county area.
The finalists were selected by a panel of judges from key Maryland education organizations representing principals, school boards, and teacher unions.
The finalist Christy Briggs is Wicomico County’s Teacher of the Year and is a 6th grade teacher at Bennett Middle School.
Briggs received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Salisbury University and has been teaching for nineteen years.
In leadership roles at the school, she has planned the Back to School Carnival and Hope for the Holidays outreach programs to support her school community.
Briggs says that her love of literacy has inspired her to create a student book club, an annual Family Read In, and an after school reading program.
Briggs says that she will soon be further interviewed later on this month.
The 2016-2017 Maryland Teacher of the Year will be announced during a gala reception and dinner in Baltimore on October 7, 2016.
