Maddalena 2OT Game-Winner Lifts Polytech Boys Soccer Past Cape

The Polytech boys soccer team battled Cape Henlopen for 97 minutes before drawing a penalty kick, and finally earning a win off a strike by Marco Maddalena 1-0 in 2OT. The win improves the Panthers to 5-0, while the loss drops the Vikings to 3-2-1.

The Vikings would control the ball for much the first half, generating a couple good scoring opportunities. Zach Gelof would head a couple on goal, but Panthers keeper Noah Lust came up with several great saves. The Panthers would then be the aggressors, using their speed and footwork to create a couple good shots. The Vikings starting keeper would leave with an injury in the first half, ans since the two other keepers had played in the jv game, they both were only eligible for a half of a game. Cape’s 2nd keeper would close out the first half, while their 3rd keeper would do an incredible job to keep the game scoreless in the second half. The teams would go to overtime where again, Cape would fire a couple shots on goal, but again Lust would be there for everyone. The teams would then go to a second overtime where with under 3 minutes to go, Polytech’s Marco Maddalena would fire a shot on goal that would get saved, but the Vikings would get called for a handball in the box directly following. Maddalena would take the pk and send it home for the win.

Polytech returns to work on Tuesday when they host Woodbridge, while Cape host Worcester Prep on Saturday.
