Festival Hispano celebrates diversity in Georgetown

The streets of Georgetown came alive today with Music, Dancing and Great food and 47 ABC was there to experience it.

Festival Hispano celebrated 21 years in Sussex county Sunday and thousands showed up for the occasion. A day dedicated  to recognizing the diversity of the Hispanic cultural heritage in southern Delaware.

“My favorite thing personally about this is seeing every culture come together as one – that’s my favorite thing. It feels good to be a part of it,” said Erin Wood, a spokesperson for Festival Hispano.

Folks enjoyed songs and dances performed by local and out of state groups of all ages, traditional arts and Latino cuisine all coming together for one cause, La Esperanza.

La Esperanza community center’s mission is to integrate the Latino family and individual into the community through education and support services like family development with an emphasis on victim advocacy for women and children. And this event, festival Hispano is their largest fundraiser

La Esperanza is the only bi cultural and bilingual multi-service nonprofit agency in Sussex County, Delaware that provides free services for the Hispanic families. And this is the community’s biggest thank you. All proceeds from the event will benefit La Esperanza which will help the organization’s community center assist thousands of families each year,
predominately women and children

Festival Hispano is La Esperanza’s biggest event fundraiser with nearly 100 participating vendors, including various Georgetown area restaurants.

Last year we were told the event brought in over five thousand people this year those numbers have increased. Festival Hispano dates back to 1995, serving as an annual event to bring the diversity of Delaware together. The event, previously held in Millsboro, outgrew the baseball fields and claimed Georgetown as their new home.

People in attendance tell 47 ABC that being able to bring their families together to celebrate where they came from and who they are is what makes events like this so special.

And a fun fact from our neighboring state; Philadelphia. September 15th – October 15th is their Hispanic Heritage Month. A time to celebrate the accomplishments, culture and legacy of the city’s Hispanic population with a range of events throughout the month. So, anyone interested in a short road trip,  that might be a good choice.
