The Delaware State women’s soccer team gave new head coach Kortney Rhoades her first career win with a 2-0 victory at Wagner Friday evening.
Sophomores Kayleigh Leschinski and Samantha Bahr scored second period goals, and Michele Lammers recorded eight saves for her sixth career shutout to highlight the Hornet win.
The match was scoreless until Bahr assisted on Leschinski’s first career goal on a shot past Wagner goal-keeper Katie Viscardi in the 52nd minute. Leschinski’s goal, on a rebound a yard from the net, was also the first of the season for the Hornets. The assist was the second of Bahr’s career.
Less than five minutes later, the Hornets added some insurance when Bahr was the beneficiary of a feed from Samantha Wanzor for her second career goal. The score occurred shortly after a corner kick from DSU’s Jasmine Warren. Wanzor, a freshman, collected her first career save.
Lammers was brilliant in the net, recording five saves in the first period. Wagner outshot the Hornets 9-6 in the opening period.
Lammers added three moves saves in the second period to keep the Seahawks off the board.
Wagner outshot the Hornets 18-12 in the contest.
Rhoades, a former Padua Academy (Del.) and University of South Carolina soccer star, was hired as DSU’s head soccer coach this summer.
The Hornets look for their second win in a row on Sunday (Sep. 4) at Quinnipiac. The match begins at 12 p.m. in Hamden, Conn.
