DSP investigating crash near Smyrna

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit says it is currently investigating a crash that happened Thursday evening on Route 1 near Smyrna.

The incident reportedly happened around 5:50 PM, as William Jayne, 46, of Dover, was driving a 2005 International Tow Truck, of D&D Towing, with his wife. Jayne was apparently driving southbound on Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway, or SR1, near Twin Willows Road when the truck had a front tire blow out.

Officials say this mechanical issue caused Jayne to lose control of the truck and go off the west side of the roadway while rotating clockwise before hitting a tree.

The impact with the tree apparently caused the truck to rotate violently and overturn, throwing Jayne from the truck, which then came to a stop in a tree line west of SR1.

According to the report, Jayne, who was not properly restrained, was taken to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Tina Jayne, wife of William, 52, of Dover, was apparently properly restrained, and was trapped inside the vehicle until fire crews freed her from the wreckage. Officials say she was taken to KGH and eventually released with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident.
