Delmar middle and high school shut down for former custodian’s funeral service

Tuesday there was no school or work for those in the Delmar School District for funeral services for Mickey Wilkins; a custodial worker for Delmar Middle and High.

Wilkins passed away suddenly last Thursday at age 45.  He was said to be a dedicated and beloved member of the Delmar facilities team for nearly twenty years.
47 ABC went to the school today to speak to parents about how they felt about their kids being out of school for the day.

One mom said Wilkins was working there when she was a student and her child would have been attending the funeral regardless of whether or not school was in session. We also ran across some folks who didn’t know Wilkins but applauded the school’s decision.

“I think it was great,” said Chelsey Thompson, a mother of kids that were out of school Tuesday. “I love the fact that everybody is so supportive of each other around here. It’s a big change from where we’re from in Baltimore so we’ve been here for about three years and I love it.”

School will be back in session tomorrow.
