United Way supports Wicomico Public Library’s Project READ

United Way of Lower Eastern Shore presented a $35,000 check to Wicomico Public Library for a new adult literacy program called Project READ. The program was initiated by the Rotary Club of Wicomico County and will provide free tutoring to adults in the five areas of literacy.
The five areas of literacy include basic literacy, finance, health, technology, and family.
The program was running for about 12 years until it came to a stop when funding came to halt during the recession. Now, United Way was able to get involved and support the program with a grant that could be used for this initiative. Also, the Project READ was able to reinvent itself by focusing on these five areas literacy.
Goals for the program are to increase adult literacy in Wicomico County and to increase the ability to attain a job. Through lessons and workshops, this project will help students with tutoring services.
If you would like to volunteer, they recommend you contact the Wicomico County Public Library, where they will put you in touch with their volunteer coordinator. They are seeking about 40 volunteers.
They are hoping to enroll their first set of students by the last week of September and first week of October.
