Troopers investigate serious motorcycle crash in Smyrna

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit says they are investigating a serious motorcycle crash that happened Sunday night.

According to the report, around 8 PM, James Smith, 53, of Dover, was riding a 2007 Honda VTX1300R motorcycle southbound on SR1 in the right lane. Officials say that due to an alleged mechanical malfunction, Smith lost control of the motorcycle which threw both him and his sister, who was riding with him, onto the ground.

James Smith was reportedly transported by EMS to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where he was treated for undetermined non-life-threatening injuries.

His sister, Kimberly Smith, 51 of Dover, was apparently airlifted from the scene by State Police Aviation to Bayhealth Kent General where through advanced lifesaving efforts by paramedics, she was admitted in critical condition.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit says they re continuing their investigation into this incident.

Officials say SR1 at Exit 119 was closed for approximately three and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

According to the report, speed and alcohol use do not appear to be factors in this case.
