Tax-Free Week kicks off on Sunday

For one week in Maryland, the state’s six percent sales tax will be cut from certain items such as clothing and shoes.
47 ABC spoke to Comptroller Peter Franchot and he told us why having this tax-free week is so important, “It stimulates people to get people in the shopping mode. This really helps the small businesses in Maryland, jumpstart the shopping that will allow them to make their margins and allow the state to get some tax revenue down the road.”
Franchot said that all types of clothing or footwear under $100 or less will be exempt from taxes.
It is reporter that it is the second busiest shopping week in the year right after Christmas. August tends to be a slow shopping month but with this tax-free week, it is greatly used for some back-to-school shopping.
Franchot tells us that they do lose a little bit of revenue, about $6 million, during the week but they make it up in increase traffic and increase shopping as people buy items that are not exempt.
