Special Olympics athlete honored as Athlete of the Month

Out of the entire state of Maryland, an Eastern shore man, Mark Wingate from Salisbury, was honored the title as athlete of the month by Special Olympics Maryland.

Wingate was nominated by his softball coach, Pam Gross, who says Mark’s hard work and leadership skills are what led his nomination.

Ron and Cindy Mayr are Mark’s friends, but as more as his caretakers, who consider him as a son.

Ron says that Wingate is taking on some bowling now and he’s actually helping other special Olympians with their bowling skills.

Cindy said that she was very proud of Mark, “He’s just an outstanding athlete, all-around person. He’s just great. We’re so proud of him, we congratulate him, we love him and just super proud of him to this Olympian of the month. “

Wingate tells 47 ABC that getting this acknowledgement was one of the biggest victories of his life.
