Roadside campaign signs are now allowed temporarily

With election season, more and more political signs are popping up along the roadside in Delaware. All signs, such as campaign signs, are usually not permitted.

State law prohibits at all times for nonofficial signage to be placed in areas such as medians and utility poles.

Due to an exemption in that state law, it now allows signs to be installed along the state road, 30 days prior and 30 days after an election, including primaries.

These signs are only allowed within the right-of-way but outside of the clear zone, which requires 10 feet from the edge of the pavement along highways.

For this election season, the exemption period applies from August 14, 2016 to December 8, 2016.

The fine for illegal sign placement is $25 per sign and $15 per sign if you would like to have the sign back.

DelDOT will resume full enforcement of the state sign law by removing non-official signs beginning December 9, 2016.
