Police investigate fatal motorcycle crash

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a fatal motorcycle crash which happened Thursday night in Red Lion.

The initial investigation reportedly has determined that the crash happened around 9:06 PM. Officials say John McDevitt, 63, of Bear, was driving a 2002 Indian motorcycle and was traveling in an eastbound direction on the right hand shoulder of DE Route 71 just west of Delilah Drive.

The front of the McDevitt’s motorcycle apparently hit the back of an unoccupied 2005 Ford Explorer which was parked on the right hand shoulder of the roadway.

According to the report, the force of the impact caused the motorcycle to become jammed in the rear of the Explorer. McDevitt, who was reportedly not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was thrown from the motorcycle and hit the back of the Ford.

Officials say McDevitt was treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics, and was then transported by ambulance to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead.

Officials report that it is unknown if alcohol or drug use were contributing factors in this crash.

This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
