Phone call scam in Dorchester County

On Tuesday, several people reportedly were contacted by telephone with the false claim of a warrant and then were asked for money.

Officials say that those contacted said the caller identified himself as “Officer Frank” with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, and he was notifying them that a bench warrant had been issued.

The caller also apparently claimed that if they would provide credit card or banking information and authorize payment of certain sums of money, the warrant would be taken care of.

Sheriff Phillips is advising that no such activities are taking place or have ever taken place and the person calling is a thief.

Any person who receives such a call is asked to call their local police department and report the incident.
