Officials investigating fatal pedestrian crash in Newark

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit says they are investigating a fatal car crash involving a pedestrian that happened Sunday night east of Newark.

The investigation has reportedly found that the crash happened around 9:40 PM, as Edward Shank, 28, of Newark, was trying to cross the street from south to north on westbound DE Rt. 2 at the intersection of Delaware Park Boulevard.

According to the report, as Shank entered the roadway, he stepped into the path of a 2014 Dodge Charger, which was in the right hand lane of Kirkwood Highway on a green traffic signal. The Dodge was apparently which was being driven by Matthew Myers, 27, of Wilmington.

Officials say the right front of the Charger hit Shank, who was then vaulted up over the roof of the car and landed in the right hand lane of the roadway. Myers apparently was able to bring his car to a controlled stop about 500 feet west of the intersection.

Officials say Shank was treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics, and was then transported to the Christiana Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

It is reportedly unknown if alcohol or drugs on the part of Shank was a factor in this crash. Shank was apparently using a marked crosswalk, however, the crosswalk signal was activated with a warning not to cross.

According to the report, Myers was properly restrained at the time of the crash and was not injured, however, he was charged by troopers with driving under the influence of alcohol third offense, driving while suspended or revoked, no proof of motor vehicle insurance, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officials say he was arraigned at JP Court 11 and committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institution for lack of $7000 cash bail, and no further charges are expected at this time.

According to the report, the westbound lanes of DE Rt. 2 were closed for approximately 2.5 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared. Officials say this crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
