across the country — it’s a policy. this is a photo of a note — sent home to second grade students at a north texas elementary school. teacher brandy young — has implemented a no-homework policy. instead — only assigning itto students who did not finish their work in class. the photo’s gotten over 73-thousand shares so far. but — this no homework policy is no stranger to delmarva. in worcester county — snow hill middle is entering its second year of with the policy. 47 a-b-c’s lili zheng joins us live outside of snow hill middle. lili — you spoke to a school official today. are there any new changes to this program? julian — the biggest changes really impact seventh and eighth graders — when it comes to math. but the school is holding strong to their policy — saying it will ultimately be better for their students. track 1 less homework — and more time for family and activities. for some — the concept is revolutionary. but for snow hill middle — it’s school policy. 21:42:29. what were asking parents to do is to trust us 32 track 2 20 minutes reading a night — that’s all students are assigned — plus — what they didn’t get done during the day. it’s a policy now in its second year — but there is one change this year — students in seventh and eighth grade could be assigned extra math assignments for practice. principal christina welch explains — there’s stipulations to that. no assignments can take more than twenty minutes to complete — and they can’t be held against the student. 21:38:56 what we gleaned from all of the articles and all the research we read was in that elementary school, it has little impact and 4th and 5th grade is considered elementary 06 and 6th, 7th and 8th grade we feel that research says it has minimal impact 12 track 3 jennifer johnson — a resident of snow hill — says she agrees with this kind of homework policy. 21:49:29 i think it’s important for families to have time together and less homework the students have to do at home, the more time they get to spend with their family 37 track 4 but some — are skeptical. 21:50:35 learning in school and coming home doing nothing…and then you go back and start all over again. but if you have homework, it helps you when you go back 44 track 4 however — principal welch — says it’s the quality of homework that’s more important. 21:42:54 so if students spend time with their family, engage in athletic events after school, even going to bed early, or even going to bed early, or even just playing outside…instead of spending two hours on a homework assignment, we feel like it’s going to make a difference for our students 09 principal welch says — if parents would like their child to be assigned extra homework — they can request to do so. the school would send home online assignments — for example. moving forward — school officials also want to look at testing data — and determine if more modifications are needed. julian — alright — thank you, lili. thats 47 a-b-c’s lili zheng reporting live in worcester county for us tonight. speaking of school — students in wicomico county will
