but today it’s law. governor larry hogan signed an executive order — for schools to start after the holiday — and end by june fifteenth. 47 a-b-c’s lili zheng joins us live in the studio with this story. lili — when will the mandate officially take effect? emily — governor hogan says this will apply next school year. he addressed the media this afternoon — along with long time advocate comptroller peter franchot — calling this move long overdue. track 1 more money in the pockets of maryland businesses. it’s a big reason why governor larry hogan says — starting schools after labor day is a good idea. “this action puts the best interest of marylanders first, especially the well being of our students” track 2 under the new mandate signed wednesday — the school year must end by june fifteenth. a 20-13 economic impact study by the state’s bureau of revenue estimates found that a post-labor day school start could generate an additional 74-point-3 million dollars in direct economic activity. a boost for small businesses — which comptroller peter franchot calls the backbone of maryland’s economy. restaurants, shops, and hotels…so many of whom heavily depend on maryland’s thriving tourism industry and the economic activity during the summer months track 2 an informal survey of a handful of residents — all we spoke to agreed on a later start date. instead of starting school then taking the labor day break and then going back afterwards…i just don’t see any sense in it gives them a chance with their parents and finish up with the vacations, around maybe their weekend and start fresh for school track 3 however — the maryland state education association says they’re concerned. in a statement sent to 47 a-b-c — sean johnson — m-s-e-a director of government relations says in part quote — “forcing all schools to begin after labor day won’t help students do better-and research shows that it can worsen summer brain drain among students from poor socioeconomic backgrounds.” track 4 but governor hogan is holding strong to this mandate — telling the media at the press conference wednesday — a later start is long overdue. “previous governors supported it and nobody ever did it, so we’re finally going to make it happen” under this mandate — schools still need to complete one-hundred and eighty days. the order also does permit schools to apply for a waiver to be exempt from the later start date. emily? alright, thank you lili. something to note — worcester county public schools actually adopted a post labor day start in 20-14. their calendar planning committee meets in october — and a pre-labor day start is typically on the table as an option. however this required later start — we’re told — will force the committee to revisit their procedures. after prior efforts have failed — maryland will finally take a
