Fire alarm prompts brief evacuation of Legislative Hall

(AP) – A fire alarm prompted a brief evacuation of Legislative Hall before officials sounded the all clear.

The alarm sounded about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.  The Dover Fire Department and Dover police responded but were on the scene for only a few minutes before departing.

Officials said a wire leading from a temporary outside cooling unit to an electrical panel in the basement overheated, causing plastic insulation to melt.

Last year, Legislative Hall was closed for more than a week after an October fire caused extensive damage to some parts of the building.

Investigators determined that the fire began when an exhaust pipe for a backup generator sparked a blaze in the attic during a test.
