Dover Police is receiving an NAACP award for building trust within the community.

The Dover Police Department announced Friday that they are receiving the NAACP Central Branch President’s Award for being a Champion of Change in the community. The award will reportedly be given at the Central Delaware Branch of the National Association of Colored People 2016 Freedom Fund Banquet on Saturday September 10 at 6:30 PM.

The organization, according to Dover PD, will award Chief Paul M. Bernat and the Dover Police Department for its reported nonstop efforts to “build bridges of trust and partnerships between law enforcement and the black community.”

La Mar T. Gunn, President-Central Delaware NAACP said, “I am extremely proud of the commitment and compassion the Dover Police Department has shown in protecting the people of Dover. Under Chief Paul Bernat, our police department sets a unity and public safety example for others to follow.”

Chief Paul M. Bernat said “I am extremely proud of the men and women of the Dover Police Department for the work they have done within our community to show that our agency is here to help everyone.  Receiving this award is an honor and a symbol of the hard work our officers are doing to build relationships in our community.  However, the true reward is seeing the smiles on children’s faces at our community outreach events, the conversations we are having in our communities, and the changes we are making in people’s lives.  We enjoy having a partnership with the Central Delaware NAACP Branch and look forward to making more progress in our city.”
