Dewey Beach raises money for local favorite

A mini-cooper crashed into Ed’s restaurant around 2 a.m. hitting a  propane line that caused a gas leak and ultimately the end of his 38 year career. In those years Ed made a lot of friends and they made that known on Wednesday at Starboard Restaurant’s fundraising event for him.

“Ed can yuck it up with the best of them,” said Steve Montgomery, the owner of Starboard. “Well, he’s met his match tonight because he’s got hundreds and hundreds of people here that all want to talk to him.”

Montgomery says Ed has been so special to the community so, they couldn’t let his career end that way. And former mayor Pat Wright, who was in attendance, agreed.

“I’ve known Ed for 35 years at least and way back before the ATM’s where available, all my beach house people would go down to write a check and we called him eds chicken and cash,” said Wright.

Chicken and crab was on the menu along with orderves and ed’s chicken and crab apparel that he was happy to sign for people.

“It’s a hell of a reason to be popular,” said the man in honor, Pat Riggen. “I really appreciate this very much with everybody coming and everything. A lot of them are my customers and everything and I just hope I can continue to know a lot of them.”

Ed says he’s not sure if he will reopen another restaurant but he is just happy to be a part of such a great community. All the money that was raised at this event will go to support Ed and his family.
