Delaware State Police post a Scam Alert Advisory

Delaware State Police is providing a Scam Alert Advisory, which is a general alert that covers any part of the state of Delaware.
Delaware State Police said Sussex County citizens have complained that phone calls from individuals were stating that they are with the IRS . The scam involves a person calling and claiming that the victim owes money to the IRS and that it must be paid promptly.
If the victim refuses, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation, or suspension of driver’s license, along with other things.
In recent phone calls, the scammer requests the victim to send money in the form of an iTunes card.
DSP states that the IRS will never:
1. Call to demand immediate payment or will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill
2. Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe
3. Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card
4. Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone
5.Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying
Officials say that many of these scams are difficult to investigate and they will target all age groups. Delaware State Police is asking citizens to remember these tips provided above in order to not become a victim of one of these scam artists.
