Big League: District 3 Shocks Top Seeded Southeast

The District 3 softball Big League team returned to action on Friday afternoon as they faced off against top seeded Southeast, pulling off the biggest upset of the tournament thus far, winning 2-1. Mya Maddox did it all for the host team, delivering the go-ahead 2 RBI double, while coming in to pitch in relief for the save.
The teams were knotted in a pitchers duel early on as neither side was able to generate much at the plate. Eventually in the bottom of the 4th, District 3 would get something started. Mika Walker would get on base, followed by a single from Karleigh Carroll. Avery Wheatley would then load the bases with a infield hit. With the bases juiced and 2 out, Mya Maddox would come through in a huge way, sending a deep shot to left center for a 2 RBI double. District 3 would have the chance for a couple more with runners in scoring position, but a deep fly out to center would end the threat.
Southeast would then respond in the to of the 5th. They would work runners on 1st and 2nd before getting a RBI single to center to cut the deficit to 1. Mika Walker would then work herself out of the jam, forcing a ground out, followed by an infield fly and another ground out. The defense then began to really turn it up a notch for District 3. Southeast would hit a grounder to short with a runner on first. Wheatley would field the ball, hustle to 2nd for the force, then fire a strike to first for the double play. Maddox would come in on relief and continued to frustrate Southeast’s batters. Down to their final out in the game, she would force an infield pop up to seal the win. District 3 dedicated the game to Hayley McCabe who couldn’t be with her team after having surgery on her ankle earlier in the day.
District 3 advances to the semifinals of the World Series, and will return to action on Saturday at 5pm.
