Big League: District 3 Shocked Late By Southwest

District 3’s Big League softball team controlled their game through 6 innings Thursday night against Southwest.

Only problem was, they played 7.

Southwest used a two run single to tie the game, before blasting a 3 run, go-ahead shot to win the game in the top of the 7th to pull out an improbable, 8-5 come from behind win.

District 3 couldn’t have started the game out much better. They would open with a RBI single from Taylor Collins. That was followed up by a 2RBI single from Sami Mumford, and then a RBI fielders choice by Lexi Ullman to stretch the lead to 4-0. Southwest began to chip away and had cut the deficit to 4-3 by the end of the top of the 5th. District three would then respond with a single from Avery Wheatley. The Delmar standout would then steal second before Mya Maddox would send a RBI double down the 3rd base line to push the lead to 2.

But in the top of the next frame, District 3 would struggle to get outs. Infield errors would allow for a couple base runners before Rebecca Skains would send a 2 RBI single to center to tie the game up. That was then followed by the biggest hit of the game, a 3 run home run from Tia Coleman. District 3 couldn’t find the answer in the bottom of the frame, as they eventually fell in the contest.

District 3 earns the 4 seed in the tournament, and will now return to action on Friday at 3pm against Southeast.
