27th annual Greek Festival takes over OC Convention Center

The Greek festival in Ocean City brings people together from all over the world to celebrate life, love, and food! This annual festival has been going on for 27 years, and shows no signs of stopping.

“We have so much fun every year, I mean, look!” said a visitor from Philadelphia “You can find anything you want to know about Greek culture, right here in these four walls.”

The festival was joined with live music and about 30 different booths all focused on Greek food, tradition, and artwork. It is also ran completely by volunteers, mostly from the Greek Orthodox church. This church is the only one of it’s kind in the Eastern Shore.

We caught up with a long time volunteer born and raised in Chile and asked him why he comes back every year.

“The dancing, the music, there’s passion and there’s love so if you ask me why we do this, it’s why wouldn’t we do this? We have a great time and we do it all for the love of family and culture.” said Diego Silvaaceituno.

It’s safe to say that the Greek festival is a day full of fun laughter and food but believe it or not the proceeds go to something much bigger. 47 ABC spoke to a member of the Greek Orthodox church and long time volunteer, Alexandra Hall about some of the missions.

“All this goes to the cause of St. George.” said Hall. The church does not collect dues every Sunday so this annual festival supports the church for the whole year. We also have a strong commitment to helping those in need. Like, St. Bezels Academy in New York City which is an orphanage center we work closely with”

47 ABC definitely didn’t want to leave but when we did, everyone there made sure we had plenty of food and Greek traditions to feast on as we departed.  Additionally, the festival  features raffles with prizes up to $10,000 and if you’d like to spend some time enjoying the Greek culture, more events are scheduled to be hosted at the Ocean City convention center.
