Wrongful death lawsuit against former UVA athlete delayed

(AP) – A wrongful death lawsuit against a former University of Virginia lacrosse player convicted in the slaying of his former girlfriend has been further delayed.

Media outlets report attorneys for both George Huguely V and Yeardley Love’s mother appeared in a Charlottesville courtroom Wednesday to take up motions in the $29.45 million lawsuit.

Sharon Love filed the suit after Huguely was convicted in 2012 of second-degree murder in her daughter’s 2010 death. Huguely is serving a 23-year sentence in prison.

A judge will put the wrongful death case on hold until a federal judge in Maryland rules on if Huguely’s family’s $6 million insurance policy could be used as payout if a jury rules in Love’s favor. The insurance provider has been fighting against the family’s claim to make that payout.

This story has been corrected to show Huguely’s name is George Huguely V, not George V. Huguely.
