Vets recommend sunscreen use on pets

Protecting yourself from the sun is important but what about your pets? Doctor Anne Flood of the Ocean City Animal Hospital says it’s worth considering, as pets can get sunburned too.

As far as what kind of sunscreen to use, some veterinary dermatologists will prescribe a special formula or you can use a baby formula sunscreen. For short haired, lighter colored animals it’s recommended that you apply it all over their coat. As for the longer haired animals, apply it on their noses and inside their ears.

Doctor Flood tells 47 ABC, “So ideally when you’re dealing with the heat of the day the peak times from like ten to three PM you really want your dogs to be inside most of the time, certainly going out for short walks and things like that is fine but if you’re going to have pretty strenuous activity, outside running around, you’re going to want that to be more towards the morning or the evening where you’ve got cooler times.”

Doctor Flood wants to remind everyone to never leave pets in the car, especially on a hot summer day and even if the windows are down.
