UPDATE: Child pulled from water at Wico. Tourist Info. Center in June, dies

A Wicomico County boy who was apparently pulled from the water in late June, has died.

Fruitland Primary School principal, Dave Harris, sent a note to FPS families on Wednesday stating that second grade student, Jy’rah Brown, had died after succumbing to injuries sustained following an accident at Leonard Mill Pond, in June. Brown was reportedly rescued from the water outside of the Wicomico County Tourist Center, back on June 27. School officials say Brown started at FPS in 2013 and was enrolled up until his death.

In the letter to parents, Harris stated, “As a school, our hearts are hurting and our thoughts remain with Jy’rah’s family,” along with, “…remember Jy’rah much as our staff does for his ever present smile and unending curiosity.”

Harris gave pointers on how to speak to students who may have known Brown, “We are aware that many of our students attend summer activities where this type of news can spread quickly. We would expect that your child may have questions for you. It is very important for you to let them talk and answer any questions that they may have openly and honestly.  Unanswered questions can cause them confusion and distort their ability to accept and understand loss. Please avoid terms such as “pass away” or “go to sleep” as these phrases have multiple meanings and can create additional anxieties for primary age children who are concrete thinkers. It is perfectly normal for the conversation to last no more than a few minutes. Allow your child to stay physically close to you if needed in the days ahead. You may find it helpful to hold a family game night or go together to the movies.  Simply spend time with your child and keep communication open.”

School officials informed parents that they may contact the school with any questions, and that counselors will be available on Thursday, July 7 from 9:00-11:00 AM at FPS to meet with students or parents for guidance during this difficult time. Officials say they will share funeral arrangements as soon as the information becomes available.
