Tyaskin man and 14-year-old granddaughter injured in motorcycle vs truck crash in Salisbury

A grandfather, and his granddaughter are in the hospital, after Investigators say a pick-up truck pulled into the path of their motorcycle.

The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office says on Wednesday morning just before 8:15 AM, Deputies responded to the scene of a motor vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck, on Pemberton Drive at Royal Mile Boulevard.

According to the report, 69-year-old Lewis Culbertson, of Tyaskin, and his 14-year-old granddaughter were riding on a 2015 Suzuki Boulevard motorcycle east on Pemberton Drive, when a pickup truck being driven by William Mengason, 45, of Salisbury, turned into the path of the motorcycle, in the intersection of Royal Mile Boulevard. Investigators say the motorcycle collided with the pickup, which caused it to go down under the truck and pin Culbertson under the motorcycle.

The Sheriff’s Office says that although both Culbertson and his granddaughter were wearing helmets, they both suffered significant injuries and they were both air-lifted from the Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Culbertson was flown to Christiana Medical Center, where he is reportedly listed in stable, but critical condition, while his granddaughter was flown to Nemours A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children, were she is apparently listed in stable condition.

The WCSO Collision Reconstruction Unit says they are continuing the investigation into this incident, and that at this time no charges have been filed. Pemberton Drive was closed for about three hours, while the collision was investigated.
