Tips on conserving energy in your home during the summer

As we are in the midst of summer many folks may be cranking up their AC’s. But with that comes a pricey energy bill each month. However, there are some ways you can save this summer just by following a few simple rules.

47 ABC spoke with Delaware Electric Co-Op President Bill Andrew and he says, “Right now is the most important time to save because you’re probably using the most energy in your home as possible.”

Andrew says setting a standard to what your systems should be set to at the beginning of the summer can be very beneficial. He says anywhere from 75 to 78 degrees is a good range and for every 3 degrees you hike your thermostat, within your comfort zone, you could save about 10% on your bill.

Andrew tells 47 ABC, “Just remember that it is a reverse refrigerator and when it’s warm outside it has to work a lot harder, in the evening it can get a lot cooler a lot more efficiently.”

Another tip that Delaware Electric Co-Op suggests is to keep your blinds closed as well as your curtains. This can help to keep the heat out. Andrew adds that doing proper maintenance on your heating and cooling systems can be a big energy savings. Andrew tells 47 ABC, “Make sure they’re properly charged, they’re properly operating that the filters are clean and that their set at a temperature that’s comfortable, not cold, not hot, but comfortable.”

As far as other electric appliances in your house, keep them to a minimum. Andrew tells 47 ABC, “Turn off any fans and any excess TV’s that may be going around the room.” Andrew adds if you can, use the microwave more often when cooking. It uses much less energy than a stove and only heats your food rather than the whole room. When it comes to using your washing machine and dryer? Wash only full loads of clothes and try to stick with cold water only.

Andrew tells 47 ABC, “It is really good to get in the habit of conserving any time you can because it pays you every month.”

Another tip, make sure your windows are sealed tightly and there are no holes or broken seals.
