SHA announces plans for roundabout on Church Creek Road

Construction has been announced to put in a roundabout at a busy Cambridge intersection.

Primary construction has started at the MD 16 Church Creek Road/Woods Road intersection in Cambridge, as the Maryland State Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration converts the existing two-way stop to a low-speed roundabout.

Assuming the weather does not interfere, the $4.1 million project is planned to be completed by late 2017. SHA is also putting in a shared-use pedestrian and bicycle path, relocating utilities, improving drainage, and upgrading lighting with LED systems.

SHA District 1 Engineer Donnie Drewer spoke about the project saying, “”Roundabouts not only improve safety by slowing and calming traffic, they also keep traffic moving, which reduces congestion. It will only take drivers one or two times through to become comfortable with the new roundabout.” Until the roundabout is open, drivers should expect occasional lane and shoulder closures.
