Ocean City Police use Snapchat to arrest a car theft suspect

Brian S. Engelmann, 24, of New York

Ocean City Police say they arrested a man on Saturday evening for stealing a car, and driving erratically on Costal Highway, after recording the whole thing on Snapchat.

Around 10:50 AM, officers reportedly responded to the parking lot at Seacrets Bar and Grille for a report of a stolen vehicle. Investigators then say they determined that a male suspect stole a 1994 Jeep Wrangler earlier that morning around 2 AM.

According to the report, officers located the vehicle parked at a condominium building around 37th Street, later that morning. OCPD says that around 8 PM the same day, they developed information that Brian S. Engelmann, 24, of New York, had posted a series of videos to Snapchat, showing him stealing the Jeep Wrangler earlier that morning, and driving it to 37th street.

After reviewing the Snapchat “story”, officials reportedly were able to see that Engelmann returned to Seacrets that night, so they were able to quickly locate and arrest him with help from the Seacrets staff.

Ocean City Police say they charged Engelmann with vehicle theft, in addition to multiple traffic violations that could be seen during the initial series of videos that Englemann had posted including using a handheld phone while driving, negligent driving, and driving while on a suspended license.

Englemann was reportedly seen by a Maryland District Court Commissioner, and was transferred to the Worcester County Jail on $20,000 bond.
