Nat’l ‘racial justice’ group reaches Delmarva

Showing Up For Racial Justice (“SURJ”), a national group, has created a local branch on Delmarva.

According to SURJ’s national website, they “move white people to act as part of a multi-racial majority for justice.”

SURJ, created in 2009, says the purpose is not to call people out but rather, “call them in”.

There are currently local chapters in and Baltimore, Maryland and Northern Virginia; however, Delmarva chapter is Salisbury based according to their Facebook page.

Head organizer James Yamakawa tells 47ABC there are currently six members.

“We do need to make it local,” says Yamakawa. “We do need to make it matter here, because we…the same issues that affect people across the country affect us here, as well.”

Yamakawa says right now, the primary focus is to gain more members and support other local chapters.
