Funds raised from ALS ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ lead to new research findings

It’s a challenge that’s been seen and felt all over the world. For the past 3 summers, the ALS ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ has drenched millions of people in ice water all while raising $220 million, $115 million of which went directly to the ALS Association. And now it appears to be paying off in major ways leading to new findings about the disease.

Because of the funding, researchers have now been able to identify the NEK1 gene, which could have an impact on who develops the disease. Meaning those who have that gene could have an increased risk of developing ALS.

For those who would like to donate to the ALS Association you can do so here: http://www.alsa.org/donate/
