Flags For Heroes raises $4,500 for Operation We Care

One charitable act of patriotism over the Memorial Day holiday has come to fruition in the middle of the summer, raising money for a good cause. The “Flags for Heroes” project, which was coordinated by club members of the Wicomico Rotary, Salisbury Sunrise Rotary, and Rotary Club of Salisbury, rasied $4,500 for Operation We Care.  The flags were set up in Salisbury off of Rt. 50 next to Perdue stadium.

Co-Founder of Operation We Care Jeff Merritt says it will go a long way for the organization which spends over $16 per care package sent abroad to U.S. service members. “We ship about 2,000 care packages a year, so we have to round up almost $30,000 [which is what] we spent last year in postage plus the contents of the boxes” Merritt tells 47ABC.

Merritt thanks all of the volunteers who helped make this donation possible, giving a special shout out to the rotary club members who took down the 500 flags for a storm, and then put them back up.  This was the first year the local Rotary Club’s participated in “Flags For Heroes” and plan on doing it again next Memorial Day.
