Fighting food insecurity in summer requires awareness

School may be out, but hunger does not go on vacation according to the Food Bank of Delaware.

Officials are not only stressing the importance of donating to local food banks but also being aware of available resources, such as their Summer Food Service Program (“SFSP”).

The federal program provides food across the state every day of the summer through community programs.

On Monday, the local food bank helped feed kids participating in a 4H activity in Selbyville.

“For us at the Food Bank, our mission is obviously a community free of hunger and especially when we talk about children,” explains Milford branch representative Chad Robinson. “There’s no reason a child should go hungry, so we want to make sure we are out there in the community and able to offer this service to folks.”

We’re told there are generally eligibility requirements families must meet in order to participate; however, Robinson says site coordinators with the Food Bank can work with them.
