Dover Police warn power customers of electric bill phone scam

The Dover Police Department has issued a warning to City of Dover electric and utility customers to watch out for electric bill scams.
The electric department says that they have gotten notice from several customers saying that they have received calls from people claiming to be with “Delmarva Power” or “City of Dover.”
These callers then reportedly claim that they have a work order to cut off a customer’s electricity, and give them a 1-800 number to call. The police advise customers that this is a scam.
This City of Dover says they do not place calls to collect payments, and ask that customers do not send money by phone, pre-paid cards, or through money services.
If you think, or have reason to believe, that your electricity is at risk of being shut off, contact the City of Dover or your respective utility company to get information. For more information on this and other scams, visit the website, here.
