Delmarva Power: $1M pledged to UMES

Delmarva Power has announced it will pledge one-million dollars to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (“UMES”).

At a joint press conference Tuesday, officials announced the money will be put towards expanding efforts of emphasizing on agriculture and renewable energy in the company’s Maryland area.

Through this grant, UMES will launch its Green Collar Initiative. It’s a series of energy conservation projects which will craft a sustainable curriculum at the school.

The initiative will include research, development and training assistance, which target agribusiness.

John Allen, VP of Delmarva Power, says one project involves designing and building a ‘green power’ model home on campus.

“The work and the research that will be done here at the university as part of the green-collared initiative will help not only to teach and to train those that are part of the community on sustainability and energy efficiency so at the end of the day, that helps them to reduce their carbon footprint,” Allen explains.

According to Delmarva Power, the money will be distributed over the next four years.
