Bicyclist struck and killed in Dover overnight

Dover police say a 47 year old man was killed around 3:45 Saturday morning while riding a bicycle on N. Dupont Highway. The man has been identified as 47 year old Tobby Ayers.  Police tell 47ABC Ayers was carrying a Maryland ID on him at the time of the crash, but the city Ayers was from could not be confirmed.

Police say Ayers was riding a bicycle in the left turning lane on Dupont Highway approaching W. Denney’s Road.  According to investigators, Ayers attempted the left turn despite a red traffic signal.  While conducting the left turn another car was traveling southbound on Dupont Hwy. and fatally struck Ayers.

Police say they believe Ayers was “possibly intoxicated” and that alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.  The driver of the vehicle that struck Ayers is not facing charges at this time.
