Beach safety tips for holiday weekend

With the beach being a popular destination for the 4th of July holiday weekend, there are some safety tips the Ocean City Beach Patrol want you to keep in mind. Ocean City Beach Patrol Captain Butch Arbin says the first rule, never swim without a lifeguard on duty. Beach patrol is there every day from 10 in the morning until 5:30 in the evening.
Arbin says you should also check in with the lifeguard on duty, especially if you have young children. He says each summer about 2,000 kids get lost and are returned to their parents. On the 4th of July? Arbin says they see about 100 lost and found kids in one day.
Another tip to keep in mind, be careful when it comes to rip currents. Arbin tells 47 ABC, “The same types of currents and dangers that exist at the beach at 8 pm at night as they do at 10 in the morning.”
Another tip they want you to keep in mind, protect your skin. Arbin says one layer in the morning isn’t enough, you need to reapply ever few hours.
