Three arrested on heroin charges after reported car chase in Seaford

Davontay L. Turner, 22 of Bridgeville; Douglas E. Butler, 21 of Bridgeville; and Vanessa Thomas-Paul, 20 of Ashburn, Virginia.

State Police say they took three people into custody on heroin charges, after a vehicle chase, near Seaford.

Delaware State Police say on Sunday around 5:25 PM, a Trooper on patrol near Sussex Highway, and Herring Run Road, noticed a blue Nissan Altima driving on on Herring Run Road, turn into the Seaford Village Shopping Center. Police say a computer check on the Delaware license plate showed that it was flagged as wanted due to felony warrants for burglaries, and a recent pursuit with Troopers.

According to the report, the Trooper was able to get behind the car in the parking lot, and turn on lights and sirens in an effort to pull the vehicle over, but the car continued, and made a U-turn in the parking lot, heading back to Herring Run Road. Police say the Nissan kept driving through the intersection of Bridgeville Highway, then northbound on Ross Station Road, before making it to the intersection of Atlanta Road to Owls Nest Road.

Troopers say the car continued westbound on Owls Nest Road, until the operator lost control on a sharp left corner, and stopped in a cornfield.  The driver, who was later identified by Police as Davontay Turner, 22, of Bridgeville, then fled out of the vehicle until he was taken into custody without further incident by the pursuing Trooper. Two passengers in the car, Douglas Butler, 21, of Bridgeville, and Vanessa Thomas-Paul, 20, of Ashburn, Virginia, reportedly stayed inside the vehicle, and were taken into custody without incident by assisting Troopers.

Police say a search of the Nissan revealed a total of 427 bags of heroin weighing 6.405 grams, .9 grams of cocaine, 7.15 grams of marijuana, and over $1,100 in suspected drug proceeds. All three of the vehicle’s occupants were taken to Troop 5, where Butler and Thomas-Paul were charged with possession of heroin, conspiracy second, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, and three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Thomas-Paul was additionally charged with tampering with physical evidence, when Police say she threw a purple bag from the passenger’s side window containing heroin. Both were then turned over to the custody of the Delaware Department of Corrections on $11,650 secured bond, and $12,750 secured bond, respectively.

Turner was charged with possession with intent to deliver heroin, possession of heroin, conspiracy 2nd, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, disregarding a police officer’s signal, resisting arrest, four counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while suspended or revoked, and various other traffic related offenses involved in this incident.

He was also apparently arrested on three other warrants that stemmed from incidents that happened between May 19, 2016 and June 2, 2016, one of them in which was a domestic related assault in which he strangled his ex-girlfriend during an argument after he broke into her home at Hickory Tree Apartments, in Selbyville. For that incident, Police say he was charged with three counts of burglary second degree, robbery second degree, strangulation, and offensive touching.

He was then ordered to be incarcerated at Sussex Correctional Institution on a $80,429 secured bond, for all charges.
