Think twice before bringing ‘Dory’ home

The highly anticipated sequel to Finding Nemo called Finding Dory came out a week ago. The brightly colored-beauties in the movies have many running out to the pet stores, but local pet store owners tell us there is a a few things people should keep in mind before bringing her home.

“He always love colorful fish. We always try to find him a blue one or an orange ones. He’s fascinated with them,” says Wynette Davis, from Salisbury, MD.

She talks about wanting another fish and everything and I tell her we probably will get a bigger aquarium,” says Michael Dashield Sr., from Salisbury, MD.

This is a typical request that parents and grandparents are getting after kids watch movies like Finding Nemo and now Finding Dory. National Geographic is calling it the  ‘Finding Nemo Effect’.

Edward Wagner, the owner of Pet Emporium in Selbyville tells us, “They come in and kids come in staring at the tank and their eyes are all bright and they’re like ‘mommy Nemo and Dory’.

Wagner  tells us his phone has been ringing off the hook for people asking for Dory, officially known as the blue tang. He tells us he doesn’t keep many in stock because he is concerned about the damage caused to reefs in order to catch this specific species.

“The worry is how they are caught and harvested in the wild and that could destroy our barrier reefs so that’s more of a concern,” says Wagner.

In order to get the blue tang  from the sea, you actually have to break open the barrier reef.  Wagner also tells us most people are not aware with the upkeep that a fish like the blue tang requires.

“Well it needs to be in a salt water environment and they recommend at least of 180 gallons,” says Wagner.

Wagner tells us a blue tang needs plenty of space to swim inside the tank and when it comes to the cost of the tank and fish he says it can add up to a few thousand dollars.

Wynette Davis tells us she knows this first hand from keeping up with her grandson’s fish requests.

“It’s a lot to do with them.Certain foods.Certain types of tanks they have to be with him. It’s expensive,” says Wagner.

Wagner recommends doing some research before going deep sea fishing for your own Dory. He tells us this will ensure this species lives up to it’s maximum years.
